Class 2A has some of the more interesting region competition over
the past few seasons. In 2A a player or two can make a world of
difference in whether a team has a successful season or a really great
season. The teams at the top of 2A this year all have a few
players who can carry a team deep into the post season.
The Reeltown
Rebels came close to winning it all last year before falling to Fyffe in
the championship game. Well Fyffe is no longer around in 2A and
the Rebels can smell blood in the water. A very difficult schedule
may prevent them from being undefeated in November but it will prepare
them well for another run at that championship.
Tuscaloosa Academy
returns one of the best quarterbacks in Preston Lancaster who threw for
almost 4,000 yards in 2023. The Knights seem to be prepared to
give the powers that be in the north a run for their money when the
season opens. Look for them to be a very solid team on both sides
of the ball capable of putting up a lot of points in every game.
The Pisgah
Eagles are led by Luke Gilbert and Legion McCrary and should be
explosive on offense much as they were in 2023 when they scored 652
points in fourteen games. A total of seventeen starters from last
season will be welcomed back when the season opens in August against
Fyffe.
Cottonwood
will be a team to be reckoned with in the south half of the state.
The Bears got a taste of what it was like last year by reaching the
third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010 and if things
go as planned they will be back there once again in 2024.
Clarke County
will be a battle tested team when the playoffs roll around having played
the likes of Leroy, Millry and Thomasville in the regular season.
They return seven players on offense and seven on defense in 2024 so the
team should have experienced players all over the field when the season
opens.
The
Coosa Christian
Conquerors came within a touchdown on winning it all last year in 1A and
are out to prove they belong in 2A this season. They play a very
difficult schedule and may lose a few games during the regular season
but make no mistake about it they will have a say in who represents the
north in 2A. QB John David Justus will lead the charges on
offense when they take the field against the Georgia state championship
team in Pierce County on August 23rd.
One thing about 2A teams is that there are always a few teams that
qualify for the post season with losing records. That is mainly
because the teams schedule higher classification schools to fill out
their schedules. This should be a banner year for at least one
team in 2A.

Difficult Schedules 2024
The Vincent Yellow Jackets have the most
difficult schedule in 2A this season. They open the season with Winterboro then play
3A B.B. Comer, 3A Childersburg and end the season against 5A Montevallo.
Their region opponents include Sulligent, Tuscaloosa Academy and Isabella.
They play seven teams which reached the playoffs last year.
Other teams with very difficult non-region schedules are Coosa Christian and
Reeltown. Reeltown will play four 3A schools in T.R. Miller, Trinity,
Dadeville and Lee-Scott Academy.
Coosa Christian will open the season against the reigning state champions
from Georgia Pierce County. They later take on 6A Pell City, 3A Fyffe
and Tuscaloosa Academy.
Aliceville will
take on 5A schools in Demopolis and Sipsey Valley. Not bad for a 2A football
program.

* Weighted schedule - AHSFHS.org uses a formula to
better show teams with difficult schedule. Example: If a team plays an
opponent from a higher classification they are awarded extra points above
their opponents win total. If they play an opponent from a lower
classification points are deducted from their opponents win total. If a team
plays an opponent from two classifications lower than their own more points
are deducted.
Most Victories 2010-2023
The Reeltown Rebels top out list
for the best record since the 2010 football season. One thing to take
notice of on this list is the fact that only two teams have won a state
championship in the past fourteen years. Why? Mainly because Fyffe was
hogging most of them.

Last
25 seasons (1999-2023)
Reeltown also tops the list for the best winning percentage of any
team in 2A over the past twenty-five seasons. The Rebels have gone
through only two seasons where they lost more games than they won during
this time. They also only missed the playoffs three times.
Surprisingly Red Bay is the second team on this list. The Tigers have
very quietly won 197 games over the past twenty-five seasons. They have made
the playoffs in all but two seasons but have only advanced past the second
round four times. They are followed by Aliceville, Tanner and Luverne.
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
