Anniston Turkey Bowl

The Turkey Bowl was played each Thanksgiving in Anniston from 1951 until 1961. The first four years saw the Calhoun County Champion play Anniston but in 1955 Anniston was out and the top two county schools played.

In 1961, the last year of the Turkey Bowl, Anniston played one last time. Beginning in 1962 all the schools in the county, except Anniston, played an 8 game schedule and the top four played in a county playoff. In 1963 and 1964 no championship was played but in 1965 the top two teams played a Championship game at Anniston.

Over the years it was known as The Model City Classic, The Calhoun County Championship and other names. The game began being played on Thanksgiving day but was later moved to an earlier date when the playoffs interfered with such a late date. The Anniston Quarterback Club sponsored the annual event.
