Sam Jones was a graduate of Moore Academy in Pine Apple, Alabama. He earned his degree from Auburn University. Coach Jones was the head football coach at Magnolia High School for the 1936-37 seasons but records are incomplete pertaining to his record at the school. Jones became the football coach at Sumter County High School in 1943 for the next nineteen years. As the football coach of the Wildcats, his teams posted a 112-51-10 record with two State Championships. His 1949 squad finished 8-0 and his 1954 track team won a state title. The 1959 Sumter County Wildcats went 8-0-1 and were named Class 1A State Champions by the Birmingham Post Herald voters. Coach Jones overall coaching record is incomplete but is at least 116-64-10. He spent 39 years in education as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in the west Alabama area. He was a member of the AHSAA Central Board of Control for 16 years, serving two terms as president. Coach Sam Jones was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Associations Hall of Fame in 1993. |
