Posted - 09/23/2021 : 14:32:05 Good afternoon, it is that time of the week. This week is a very good week of high school football. This could be the best week of the year. So let us get started.
7A: Central Phenix City Vs Opelika You know I almost put the Thompson vs Mountain Brook game, and I think highly of Mountain Brook but I do not think they stand a chance against Thompson. This game is a rivalry those are usually great games. These two schools are both contenders in their respective classifications. CPC is the last team to defeat Thompson, could they meet them again for the state title? Can Opelika put early defeats behind them and attempt to capture the 6A title? There will be no shortage of talent in this game. This game will be very fun to watch, and I look forward to this game. My Prediction: CPC has more talent than Opelika and has more depth. Opelika will give it everything they got, but will fall short of one of the best teams in 7A with the talent to knock off Thompson. CPC wins 41-38.
6A: Helena vs McAdory What a pleasant surprise these two teams have been. This is the best start in Helena's program history. McAdory has bounced back from some down years. These two teams are entering undefeated and both could contend for the 6A title. You have the traditional power who has been playing football for over 100 years, versus the new kids on the block who have not even played football for 10 years. The classic "Old vs New" Battle. My Prediction: I think highly of both teams and do not think this will be the last time they face this season. However I think Helena takes down McAdory to continue their quest for a perfect season. Helena wins close 17-14
5A: Pleasant Grove vs Central Clay County Last season I thought these two teams would meet once again in the state title game. I was wrong as St. Pauls won. However Pleasant Grove made it back. Do I think these two teams will meet once again for the state title? Yes. However these two teams find a way to put on a show once again. You have Central Clay who is very good and I think will take down the Pike Road Patroits this November, vs Pleasant Grove who is looking to capture that state title after losing in back to back title games. My Prediction: Pleasant Grove takes this game, but Central Clay will win the title and send Pleasant Grove with another runner up trophy this December. Give me Pleasant Grove to win 42-34.
4A: Handley vs Lanett Lanett was the closest team to beating Handley last season and Handley only lost to Central Clay County by a singular point. This game last year ended 6-3. Will this year be the same story? or will Lanett find a way to knock off the best team in 4A? Overall I think this game will be a high scoring showdown. My Prediction: Handley is the same if not better than last season where they should had gone undefeated. Lanett will still make a deep run in 2A, however Handley will be your 4A champions for a reason. Give me Handley to win 49-40.
3A: Montgomery Catholic vs Montgomery Academy These two schools are a blast to watch. Last season they spilt the series and Catholic won the game that matter the most to clinch a title appearance. Montgomery Academy stumbled early but their offense has bounced back and looks just like last season. Montgomery Catholic has destroyed every team in their way so far. This game will be a battle of who's defense makes the play when it matters most. My Prediction: Montgomery Catholic is the only team I see that can defeat Fyffe(sorry Piedmont). Montgomery Catholic wins this and cruises to the playoffs. Catholic wins 35-24.
2A: Leroy vs Sweet Water These two teams will most likely be in the title picture at the end of the season. I could even see either or both of these teams winning their respective classification. Sweet Water and Leroy both have a common opponent as they both defeated Thomasville in close games. This game is a battle of which is better 2A or 1A, and I am trilled to see it. My Prediction: Leroy is a darkhouse to win the 2A title. Sweet Water is very good and I think they will make it to the semi finals. However Leroy wins this one and starts to climb the rankings. Leroy wins 14-8.
1A: Keith vs Southside Selma I bet you did not expect this one. You are probably wondering why I picked this game. Well, allow me to set the stage. Keith is honestly the biggest mystery in all classifications. No one knows how good they really are. They crushed the defending state champions 43-0. Keith is now turning heads and people are wondering "Where did they come from?" Keith's program has been around since 1966 and this is their hottest start in program history. They have yet to allow a singular point, thats insane to think about. On the otherside you have the Southside Selma Panthers. Who has really turned their program around after going 0-10 in 2018. This team could make noise in 3A, they have an explosive offensive that can keep up with a lot of teams. This team can upset some teams in November. Southside Selma will most likely come in 2nd in their region or 3rd at the lowest. They have Montgomery Academy in their region who handed them their only loss so far. My Prediction: Keith is out to the best start of their program. Southside Selma will have a very good season and will make it past the first round at minimum. However I have Keith taking this one and continuing their quest to go undefeated and to continue to be the biggest surprise in the state. Keith wins, but gives up their first points of 2021. Keith wins 26-21.
And that is it for this week! comment which games you are looking forward to this week and see y'all next thursday! |

Posted - 09/24/2021 : 06:58:18 Clarke County and Fyffe would be a great game but it is my understanding they are not playing this year. It was just a fill in game from last season for Fyffe.
I also agree that whoever scheduled the Coosa Christian and Gatlinburg game is a true winner. The Smoky Mountains will be a fantastic trip for a bunch of kids. Hope they enjoy it.

Posted - 09/23/2021 : 22:48:16 I am not sure if Fyffe vs Clarke County is still on. I have seen some that say they have an off week and some say they play. |

Posted - 09/23/2021 : 22:39:16 7A: Central Phenix City vs Opelika This should be a great game. Opelika is better than their record just because they always play one of the toughest schedules every year. In contrast, I don't think Central is as good as they have been. In years past we've seen them dominate their region, but they've had multiple close calls already and haven't even played Auburn yet. Pick: Central Phenix City wins 24-19
6A: Mountain Brook vs Thompson Just for the sake of being different, I'll pick this game. Mountain is a really good team with a great chance of making a state championship run--but they're not in the same league as Thompson. Picks: Thompson wins 49-17; McAdory wins 20-10
5A: Pleasant Grove vs Central Clay County It's always hard to pick against a Danny Horn coached team, but Pleasant Grove seems tired of finishing runners-up. It seems like everything is clicking for them to finally win a state title. Pick: Pleasant Grove wins 36-23
4A: Munford at Lincoln Technically the home team is 5A, but it's kind of a down week across the state and I didn't want to pick all the same games, so I'll just be a homer and pick my alma mater's rivalry game. Munford has won the last 2 and 6 of the last 7 in the series. Lincoln has a great defense but a terrible offense. Munford is decent everywhere but not great anywhere. The last time we beat Munford, we converted a 4th and 19 from our own 1 yard line via a 99 yd TD off of a hook and ladder with just over a minute left. Oh, and there's usually a fight or two in this one. My senior year there were 5 players ejected in two separate fights. Picks: Lincoln wins 14-12; Handley wins 47-20
3A: Saks vs Geraldine Again I'm just trying to be different. Both of these teams are expected to finish 2nd in their regions. Saks' lone loss was a respectable two-score loss to Piedmont. Geraldine lost their opener by two points to Westminster. This game will also tell us how Geraldine stacks up with Sylvania, who they'll face later this year for the 2 seed in their region...Saks beat Sylvania by ten in Week 0. Picks: Saks wins 36-20; Montgomery Catholic wins 28-20
2A: Clarke County vs Fyffe There's a very real possibility this is the best team Fyffe will play in the regular season, and that's saying something after they only beat Sylvania by 3. But I'll assume that was a wake-up call for the Red Devils. Picks: Fyffe wins 34-21; Sweet Water wins 40-36
1A: Pickens County at Aliceville These teams play incredibly difficult schedules every year, and this matchup is a big reason why. You can usually count on this one being a low-scoring affair. Picks: Pickens County wins 22-12; Keith wins 21-19
Bonus: Coosa Christian at Gatlinburg-Pittman (TN) I don't know how Coosa Christian pulled scheduling this game off, but shout out to them for making it happen for their kids. For a team unlikely to compete for a state championship, I'd have to imagine this is pinnacle of their entire season. Not only are they getting to play what is probably the most well-known "small school" in Tennessee, but they're also getting a trip to Gatlinburg out of it. I honestly don't know much about their football team, but Google says Pittman is 2-3 this year, with two of their losses to top 5 teams. Pick: Pittman wins 42-7

Posted - 09/23/2021 : 15:10:26 I am really looking forward to that Catholic and MA match up. I haven't checked yet but if it's on NFHS Network, I plan to watch it.
Not a great week here in the Shoals, but there are a few games of interest.
Hartselle (6A) vs. Russellville (5A)
I really thought Russellville would be more impressive this year. I know, they are undefeated but they had much more trouble with Deshler and Decatur than I expected. That being said, they are riding a 2 game shutout streak. Hartselle is on a collision course with Muscle Shoals next week in a game that will likely determine the 6A Region 8 winner. I knew Hartselle would be much improved this year, but they are a year ahead of schedule in my opinion. If Russellville can keep it competitive then they may be a real player in 5A North.
Prediction: Hartselle 41 Russellville 21
Mars Hill (2A) vs. Cullman (6A)
Last year Cullman came into this game undefeated and ranked in 6A. Mars Hill was an established 2A power. However, even as Coach Darrell Higgins stated, I think Cullman overlooked Mars Hill and paid the price falling 21 to 6. This year Cullman comes in at 3-2, but still a very formidable 6A team. Mars Hill has one loss on the year and has looked like the same old Mars Hill with some very explosive players. I know the Mars Hill QB has been a little banged up which has limited their offensive scheme somewhat, but they still have the ability to bust a big play (especially on special teams) at the drop of a hat. Something tells me Cullman has had this game circled and won't overlook Mars Hill again.
Prediction: Cullman 24 Mars Hill 14
Rogers (4A) vs. Lauderdale County (3A)
I stated earlier this week that I still don't think LCHS is quite at top 10 level just yet, but to be clear this isn't an insult. I think they are definitely trending in that direction. They aren't going to wow you a lot but they are a typical LCHS team. They play tough disciplined defense and move the ball methodically. Rogers came out of the gate and shocked a lot of people by beating East Limestone (maybe not so shocking now that we see East is struggling) and Rogers played Central tough last week, losing 21 to 17. Rogers is likely the 5th or 6th best team in 4A region 8, but could easily slip into the playoffs if a few breaks go their way. This will be the toughest test for Lauderdale County thus far and will be the toughest test all year until they meet Brooks in the final week. This will be one of those old-timey county school matchups with alot of physicality and hard nose running. The winner may be the team who has the least bumps and bruises at the end of the night.
Prediction: LCHS 16 Rogers 12
