My Mom, Aunt, Grandmother and basically that whole side of the family went to Union back in the day. Union High and Union Academy is pretty much the same school.
It started as a local rural school with a Dadeville address but in the community of Union about 9 miles North of Reeltown, and about 14 miles SW of Dadeville proper.
I know of at least it going back to the 20's as Union School/Union High School and was built around the time Martin Dam was built. The community that Alabama Power built for the workers to stay at sent some of if not all of their kids to Union.
It stayed as Union School/Union High until 1967 when Union Academy was formed and then become a private school until it's closing. They played basketball a good bit but I'm not totally certain of their football playing days before becoming the Academy. I know the Dadeville newspaper is posted online now I think so I'll see if I can't sign up for it and try to find any kind of history if there is any.
The school was located on Highway 50 and they were the Indians I know pre-1967 as well as my Mom graduated in 66 and they were the Indians then too. I may even have a newspaper clipping on the full history of the school that I'll try to find as well.
So I'm not sure if it should be listed under two schools or one? It's weird I know LOL |
