Good afternoon! I hope you are all having a wonderful day, it is going to be our last regular season week of the season. While this is sad because we won't have as many games, this is where it really gets fun. So let us get into our finale for the regular season.

7A: Auburn vs IMG Academy
So, this week in 7A there are not many good games to pick from. but this one is very interesting because Auburn could make a case for being the best team in the 7A south, if they can make this game close. IMG has enough talent to beat small colleges. Does Auburn have a chance to pull off a major upset? My Prediction: No, I do not think Auburn will pull off the upset, and I think IMG will put on a show for the viewers of Auburn. IMG wins 52-14

6A: Clay-Chalkville vs Oak Mountain
I believe this will be the best or the second best offense Clay Chalkville has faced this season. Oak Mountain has lost 3 games, but all of them have been to very good teams. Clay Chalkville has crushed everyone this season, but Oak Mountain is not a team to overlook, expect a close game. My Prediction: This will be Clay Chalkville's closest game, but they will win in the end. Clay Chalkville wins close 51-42.

5A: St. Pauls vs Vigor
I almost picked Helena vs UMS for either the 6A game or the 5A game however I will tell you right now, I think UMS will crush Helena. Nevertheless we have a good matchup between two good football teams. I remember at the beginning of the season St. Pauls got off to a very slow start. Vigor is undefeated through 9 games for the first time since 2009. This game does not mean anything for playoff seeding, but it will show us how good both programs are in their respective class. If St. Pauls wins, does this mean they could take down Pike Road in the second round? we shall see. My Prediction: One of my favorite sayings is "It is not how you start the race, it is how you finish the race". St. Pauls got off to a slow start but has bounced back. Vigor had a close call last week against St. Michael, do not let the scoreboard fool you. I think St. Pauls will win and begin their quest for a repeat. St. Pauls wins 31-16.

4A: Handley vs Central Clay County
This game once again does not matter for playoffs but it does in a way. Handley was gifted another region championship after Anniston had to forfeit their region win against Jacksonville, causing Anniston to drop to a four seed. Central Clay County just got embarrassed vs Tallassee. I think this will be interesting because it will show if Clay is having a down year, or if Handley's lost vs Anniston was a fluke. My Prediction: I no longer think either of these teams will be state champions. I have Handley winning and continuing Clay's late season woes. Handley wins 20-14.

3A: Piedmont vs Alexandria
I think Piedmont is very good this year, if there was anyone in the 3A north to win state, I would pick them today. I could also say the same thing about Alexandria in the 5A north. My Prediction: I have Alexandria winning 42-28

2A: Mars Hill vs American Christian
I will make this quick and easy. Mars Hill has struggled with bigger schools. American Christian is a bigger school, that is also very good. My Prediction: American Christian wins, 42-27.

1A: Wadley vs Spring Garden
This is interesting because I want to see if Spring Garden could take the 2A north and contend for the title. 2A north this season has been very strange and unpredictable. Although Wadley is a 1A team, they are a very good 1A team and should give Spring Garden a good game. My Prediction: Spring Garden wins and begins their quest for a title. Spring Garden wins 21-6.

That is all for this week and see you all next week for the first round of the playoffs!

7A: Auburn vs IMG Academy
Easiest game of the week to pick. IMG isn't as good as they used to be, but they are still a lot better than any team in this state not named Thompson or Hoover.
Pick: IMG wins 45-14

6A: Helena at UMS-Wright
This is where it gets tricky for a team like Helena. Your school has never gone undefeated. Do you play your starters and try to keep the undefeated season alive? Or do you play the backups and accept defeat assuming UMS plays their starters? It would be hard for me to sit my starters knowing an undefeated season was on the line, especially at a school that had never done it before.
Pick: Helena wins 28-27

5A: Russellville at Madison Academy
Here's where we'll find out if Russellville has a chance in 5A North. I'd argue that Madison Academy, despite being 4A, is probably better than any of the 5A North teams. So if Russellville can even keep this one within 20 points then I'll really start to consider them a legitimate threat.
Pick: Madison Academy wins 44-20

4A: Vigor vs St. Paul's
I think if you had looked at this matchup in the preseason you would have thought the teams' records would be swapped, but St. Paul's struggled out of the gate and Vigor has played well all year. I think this is one of those games that, if both teams play at full strength, it could go either way. As it stands, I think it'll just depend on which team cares more about winning this one and plays their starters longer.
Pick: St. Paul's wins 22-16

3A: Piedmont vs Alexandria
Alexandria is the better team. I feel pretty confident in saying that. But here's the deal, Alexandria doesn't gain anything by winning this game. They've been here before. They've had undefeated seasons. They've won state championships. Piedmont has to win this game to win their region. They'll play their starters as long as it takes to pull it out.
Pick: Piedmont wins 35-26

2A: Mars Hill vs American Christian
After their opening game loss to Parker, I wrote American Christian off for this year. Turns out Parker is actually pretty good in 5A, and American Christian might be even better than they were last year. Mars Hill isn't as good as they have been as they've struggled against pretty much every quality opponent they've faced.
Pick: American Christian wins 34-22

1A: Wadley vs Spring Garden
Here's another interesting matchup. Neither team really gains anything from winning this game in terms of the postseason, but both are technically undefeated (Spring Garden lost to Cleveland but later received a forfeit win). The fact that these are two small means that they might be forced to play all their normal starters out of necessity because most schools this small don't have more than a two-deep roster anyway. I do think we'll learn more about Wadley in this game because they were in a relatively weak region compared to last year.
Pick: Spring Garden wins 33-14

Just went and looked at the scores from last night. I swear I had no idea half of these games had already been played. It looks like Russellville might indeed be a threat in 5A North, which is just exactly what I wanted to hear considering we play them in the 1st round next week. Also I'd be very interested to know if teams like Clarke County and Maplesville rested any of their players as both had pretty surprising losses last night.

Shoals Area games to watch

(5A)#6 Russellville vs (4A)#1 Madison Academy

Really this is the first test (outside Hartselle) that Russellville has really had all year. They have played an awful schedule, to really no fault of their own. Their region was way down and Decatur (although in playoffs) and Deshler are both a little down this year. RHS does have a good defense but has been inconsistent. They will have to be consistent against a very good Madison Academy team.

Prediction: MA 33 Russellville 21

(4A) #6 Brooks vs (3A) #5 Lauderdale County

Heated rivalry with more stakes on it than in a long time. LCHS last went undefeated in 72 and Brooks last went undefeated in 06. Two contrasting styles. Brooks will look to go downfield at a high tempo, while LCHS will try to hold the ball and methodically march down the field to keep Brooks offense off the field. Brooks has the speed but has been undisciplined at times. Not an insult to the team just truth. Coach Black himself has said they haven't played a complete yet, but when they do watch out? Will that be tonight? LCHS has an imposing defense. Maybe not as fast as Brooks offense, but very disclipined. Rarely are they out of place. Brooks will need to strike quick and often to put LCHS out of their game plan. If they don't and it's close at the end, watch out.

Prediction: Brooks 42 LCHS 26

(2A) Lexington vs (4A) Rogers

Two of the best stories of the Shoals area this year. Lexington is getting to the playoffs for the first time in many years and after many years of taking beatings right and left. Rogers, coming off a bad year and looking dead in the water rallied the last two weeks under first year coach hometown boy Daniel Garrett, to pull off two upsets of West Limestone and West Morgan and now find themselves in the playoffs as the 4th seed. Neither team passes much and with potential bad weather, you may not see more than 6 or 7 passes total in this game. Lexington has the speed, Rogers has the size. I think this will come down to line play and I have been thoroughly impressed with Lexingtons defensive line. By the narrowist of margins...

Prediction: Lexington 14 Rogers 13

The one game Sloth has that features a Shoals team is Mars Hill and American Christian. Hats off to Mars Hill for playing an absolutely brutal schedule. People are starting to overlook them in 2a. Big mistake. But they don't have the horses to run with American Christian.

Prediction: American Christian 38 Mars Hill 17
