Hello and welcome to my latest installment of this series where I preview this weeks best games around the state.

7A: Vestavia Hills vs Thompson
Well here we go in 7A this game seems to be a popular upset pick. Could VH make a return to title contention by knocking off one of the best programs in the country? Or will they kneel before the kings of 7A as they continue their quest for a title. We shall see Friday night. My Prediction: Vestavia has built a lot to look forward to next season, however November is when the big boys come to play. I am taking Thompson to beat the Rebels with little struggle. Final Score: Thompson 34 Vestavia Hills 3

6A: Hillcrest Tuscaloosa vs Saraland
I think this will be a great game and I believe the winner of this game will make it to the 6A title game. As long as Saraland is eligible to play(That is still in question at the time of this writing) then I think they will win their first title. Hillcrest has been great but I have heard their starting Qb is done for the season with injury. My Prediction: I am taking the Spartans of Saraland to continue their quest for a title. Final Score: Saraland 27 Hillcrest 20

5A: Gulf Shores vs Central Clay County
Let us first talk about this horrible drive the Dolphins have to make. That has to be close to a five hour drive, safe travels Gulf Shores. As they make their trip to Lineville. Central Clay has all the championship seasoning needed to make a November run, I think this will be an awesome game. My Prediction:Not picking against Central Clay I am taking them to win. Final Score: Central Clay County 21 Gulf Shores 20

4A: Jacksonville vs Montgomery Catholic
The Golden Eagles take on Catholic in what should be a high scoring affair on both sides. I think Jacksonville has played the tougher schedule but I do not think that will matter against this buzzsaw of a team. Jacksonville will have the home field, but I don't know if it will help as much as they hope. My Prediction: I will take Catholic to win in a high scoring game. Final Score: Montgomery Catholic 52 Jacksonville 34

3A: Saint James vs WS Neal
You may be scratching your head, maybe even puzzled on why I chose this game. Well, this is personal. Saint James, nor WS Neal, have made it past round 2 since 2003. Something has got to give. Saint James used to be stuck in 4A against teams double their size. They should had won and ended their 2nd round woes in 2019 in Flomaton if not for some VERY VERY questionable officiating. I played in that game. It was flag after flag after flag after flag. Chop block on defense? Never seen it called before, and since that night, I have yet to see it called since.People at Saint James still talk and question the officiating crew from that night. WS Neal has been doing really well with their coach. It feels like they are building towards something great, but I think that will have to be for next year. My Prediction: Saint James ends the 2nd round curse and will face Thomasville in round 3. Final Score: Saint James 28 WS Neal 21

2A: Ariton vs Highland Home
We make our trip down to south alabama against two great 2A teams in Ariton and Highland Home. Highland Home has not looked as great and it seems they are falling off and not rising as we thought. I think Ariton is a fine team and will win. My Prediction: Ariton upsets Highland Home and makes it to state later this month. Final Score: Ariton 29 Highland Home 28

1A: Linden vs Brantley
Both of these teams are title contenders. You could say that the winner will be holding the blue map in December. You could say this is the biggest game in 1A this season. I think Linden is good but I really think Brantley is better. My Prediction: Brantley wins and gets to play Maplesville next week. Final Score: Brantley 34 Linden 21

That is all for this week and see you all next week!

So I've actually seen chop blocks get called on the defense before in both high school and college games. Typically it's on a play where a defensive player, while making no attempt to actually tackle the ballcarrier, dives down and takes out the legs of a blocker. So it's not really a "block," and that's what usually makes the call confusing whenever it's made.

I don't know the exact wording of the rule, but essentially, the way I understand it, just as offensive players can get called for blocking below the waist, defensive players also cannot "block" (take out a blocker) by hitting them below the waist.

I don't the rule book specifically calls out offense or defense. Couple of key points. Blocks/contact below the waist must occur in the "free blocking zone" and must be an immediate action.
