Posted - 09/13/2023 : 12:28:42 Once again, these are some of the biggest games in each class that we weren't able to cover in the Barber Shop Gurus this week.
7A: Foley vs Baker This is a crucial game for both teams. Baker needs the win to keep pace with Mary G. Montgomery in the region. A loss would pretty much assure Foley of a road game in the 1st round of the playoffs. There will be some great players in this one, with 5 star WR Perry Thompson for Foley, and 3 stars in WR Bryce Cain and QB Josh Flowers for Baker. This could be a shootout. Pick: Baker 52, Foley 38
6A: Parker vs Mortimer Jordan Mortimer Jordan is probably the biggest surprise in 6A so far, having knocked off both Leeds and Gardendale already after a miserable season last year. Parker is a state title contender behind one of the best defenses in the state, so this is an opportunity for Mortimer Jordan to really announce their arrival. Pick: Parker 40, Mortimer Jordan 14
5A: Elmore Co. vs Central Clay Co. Another battle of unbeaten teams that has major playoff implications. Region 4 is a pretty balanced region with a top 4 that consists of both of these teams along with Valley and Beauregard. Clay Co. sent a message with their dominant win over Benjamin Russell a couple weeks ago. Now they'll face the challenge of Elmore County's 3 star WR Jabari Murphy. Pick: Central Clay Co. 35, Elmore Co. 13
4A: Cherokee Co. vs Oneonta A region title is likely on the line in this one. Oneonta snuck away with a 17-14 win a year ago, but they are the clear underdog this year. This game could be over in close to two hours, as both teams will lean heavily on the run game. They have two of the best backs in the state, with Jacob Cornejo for Cherokee Co. and Fluff Bothwell for Oneonta. Pick: Cherokee Co. 35, Oneonta 17
3A: Ohatchee vs Sylvania Both teams come into this region matchup unbeaten, but Sylvania is the clear favorite, and they might be the favorite for the state championship at this point as well. I think Sylvania is obviously the better team and likely will win comfortably, but this has the potential to be a trap game as it's sandwiched between games against Piedmont and Geraldine for the Rams. Pick: Sylvania 42, Ohatchee 14
2A: Cleveland vs Locust Fork Locust Fork has been impressive through three games, winning each by over 20 points and averaging well over 40 ppg, and they've faced some solid opponents in Appalachian and J.B. Pennington. Cleveland is 0-2, but they've also faced a tough schedule so far with Appalachian and Oneonta. This is a big game because Cleveland is the program that typically controls this region, so a dominant win for Locust Fork would really show them to be a team to contend with this year. Pick: Locust Fork 48, Cleveland 14
1A: Hackleburg vs Addison Meek seems to have taken a small step back, so this game could decide the region title. Historically, that's exactly where these two programs expect to be, but they're both in 5+ year droughts without a region title. Pick: Addison 20, Hackleburg 16 |
