They return a lot of contributors from last years team that went 5-5 but lost 4 games by a combined 20 points. They also leave a loaded region with Sulligent, Lamar County, Aliceville and Tuscaloosa Academy and move to a good but arguably less difficult region with Decatur Heritage, Lexington, Red Bay, Tanner and Tharptown.

Yes, that's a much better situation for them. I think DH, Lexington, Winston County and Tanner will be the 4 teams in the post season out of that region.
That Region 5 they left picked up Isabella and Vincent. One sports writer I talked to called it the SEC West of 2A. I think Tuscaloosa Academy, Isabella, Vincent, and Sulligent are the 4 best in that region this year. Tuscaloosa Academy's picked to win it all by several people close to that program. |

I've only really started diving back into things in the past couple of weeks, but here are some under-the-radar teams I'm keeping an eye on.
7A: Carver-Montgomery, Daphne 6A: St. Paul's, Percy Julian 5A: Williamson, Vigor 4A: Brooks, St. Michael 3A: Cottage Hill Christian, Lee-Scott Academy, Piedmont (this feels weird to say) 2A: Winston Co, Providence Christian 1A: Hackleburg, Ragland, Winterboro

The ground game will definitely be our strong point. Our runningback made 2nd team all state last year as a tenth grader and still don't see how he didn't get first team. 1,600 yards, 36 TD's, over 2,500 all purpose yards. We've got a solid offensive line, got a good wr core but we just lost our 4 year starting QB. So time for a new leader to step up.

Posted - 08/08/2024 : 14:39:02 Some of these aren't a really a reach, maybe more of an underdog, but I'm going heavy on the newcomers.
7A: I like Carver, especially with some of the recent developments in that classification.
6A: I like the 6A newcomers Gulf Shores to make some waves. Arguably one of the best coaching staffs in the State.
5A: Another newcomer in Catholic Montgomery. Not a big drop-off from last years squad and it's a team that's used to winning. They won't be intimidated.
4A: When in doubt, head to Mobile. I like Mobile Christian returning their starting QB and RB.
3A: Locust Fork was a buzz saw in 2A until they ran into a really physical Fyffe team in the 3rd round of the playoffs. I believe those two will have another shot at each other this season. Maybe LF will still have a chip on their shoulder.
2A: Coosa Christian. How they handle the 2A favorite Tuscaloosa Academy later this season will say alot, but I think they have frustrating mismatches in Eli Motes and DJ Mackey. Not many 2A teams can run with those guys. Both those teams may be moving up to 3A next realignment.
1A: Elba. Georgia State commit Cayden Adkins is reportedly going to be at QB with Auburn commit RB Alvin Henderson. You better buckle your chin straps. If nothing else I expect them to be the most physical team in 1A. |

Posted - 08/08/2024 : 11:12:41 Let's take a swing at this, I'll try to keep my guesses to teams either unranked or also receiving votes. I feel more confident guessing the lower classifications but:
7a: lazy guess is Carver, lots of talent and a good staff. Lot of haves and have nots in 7a
6a: Theodore, another good coach and a team that recently had success in 7a/6a
5a: Vigor, always talented and I think the mess with the coaching situation might have gotten the team to band together
4a: St. Michael, good qb can take you a long way
3a: Alabama Christian - I think they return a lot of skill players and a big qb, smaller school but should have good turnout for depth. To TP's pick, MA should have a lot of weapons but you should really watch out for them next year, lot of juniors and sophomores on the roster
2a: Goshen, listen to the 2a preview podcast
1a: Linden, softer region so they can get hot and surely this dip in performance is an anomaly ... right? |
