What's the biggest upset in the playoffs you remember? That one time when no one thought a team could lose yet they did.
And go......

They moved the 6A game to Legion Field on that Thursday so Hoover wouldn't have a "home game" for the state title (as well as the scheduled 3A game, Oneonta beating Winfield 28-21) and moved everything else to the Met.

Posted - 10/29/2024 : 23:16:47 Other upsets I can remember...
2002 Albertville over Gardendale--Gardendale was undefeated, ranked #2 in 5A (behind Russellville), and was thought to be a true heavyweight contender for the 5A state title. Albertville, while a solid 7-3, looked to be a speed bump. However, head coach John Grass (who would later lead Jacksonville State to the FCS Championship Game) had his team ready, and they took the game to Gardendale from the jump and pulled a 28-14 stunner.
2001 J.O. Johnson over Anniston--Johnson was 4-6, barely averaged 16 points a game, and went to Anniston and beat the unbeaten Bulldogs 31-29 to knock them out of the playoffs.
2004 Athens over Pinson Valley--5-5 Athens, with some young talent (including future Nick Saban-impersonator Rob Ezell and future Alabama offensive lineman Alfred McCullough) but some headscratching losses (including a 17-10 loss to a 3-7 Austin team), goes to Pinson and upsets the Indians and stud quarterback Desmond Jennings (who would go on to play several seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays) en route to a semifinal appearance. Pinson was a huge dark horse contender that year--Jennings was that kind of talent. But Athens got a lead, Jennings got dinged up, and that was that. |

From my playing days...
2000: 9th grade year: Randolph County (3-3) hosted #2 Clay County( 6-0) on Friday the 13th in October. Randolph County won that game 18-13. Clay County went on to win the 2A State Title.
2002: 11th grade year: Randolph County entered the playoffs (5-5). In the second round we hosted #2 Red Bay (11-0). RC jumped out on Red Bay 21-0 without the offense touching the field(2 kick returns and a punt return for tds). RC ended up winning 24-16 to advance to the qtr finals before falling to Pisgah.
Outside of my playing days:
2015: Ranburne ended the regular season (9-1) and the traveled to #1 Tanner in the second round and won 56-55 in a double overtime, they went for the two at the end and got it. Ranburne was 9-1 but the majority of the state didn't expect them to beat a Tanner team that was winning games by an average of 57-14.
2004: The best Cinderella story I've watched. Woodland entered the playoffs as a third seed. After losing to Clay County in the regular season 47-6, they got the rematch of a life time in the semi finals. Woodland won 21-20. It was a win that ended in one of the most controversial calls. The newspaper came out showing the image of QB John Ward going for the score near the end of the game, he was ruled a touchdown but the image in the paper showed him clearly down 1/2 yard behind the endzone. Woodland lost 17-14 against Leroy in a championship game that was held at the Hoover Met.
I've played in many memorable games, I've seen my fair share of memorable games too.
The 6A game was played at Legion Field but all others where at the Hoover Met. I think there was an event going on at Legion Field but can?t remember what it was.

Posted - 10/29/2024 : 13:16:29 Off the top of my head, the biggest I can think of is probably Parker beating Clay-Chalkville 7-6 in the 1st Round a couple of years ago.
In 2016 there were several. Lincoln entered the playoffs 3-7 and knocked off region champ Demopolis in the 1st Round. That same year Oxford went 10-0 in the regular season but lost to 5-5 Muscle Shoals in the 1st Round.
Also in 2016, after winning just 7 games combined in the previous 4 seasons, Hokes Bluff went 6-4 and finished 4th in their region only to reach the semifinals by beating 9-1 Haleyville, North Jackson, and then Cherokee County, who had beaten them 30-7 in the regular season. They would lose by 3 to Madison Academy in the Semifinals.
I'd also throw in Booker T. Washington beating Jackson in the 4A Quarterfinals last year. Not many people thought BTW would get past American Christian or Handley, much less Jackson.
Of games I attended, in 2017 Munford went 9-1 with a region title and was ranked #6 in the final poll, and they were hosting 5-5 W.S. Neal in the 1st Round. If I remember right, W.S. Neal took the lead pretty early and just held on the rest of the game. The whole time it felt like you were just waiting for Munford to take control of the game at any moment. It wasn't until W.S. Neal had an interception in the final minute, and I think it was a pick six, that anyone actually thought Munford would lose that game. Final score was 21-12. |

Posted - 10/29/2024 : 10:48:27 Recency bias off the top of my head .. Parker beating Clay-Chalkville 7-6 in 2022. CC was 9-1, only lost to Thompson by 3. They had won 23 of their last 24 games, had a 33-point differential, and had their eyes set on back-to-back championships.
Last year, UMS-Wright beating Central Clay 7-0. Central Clay was 10-0, UMS was 5-5 on the field. CC had not scored less than 28 all year and was completely shut out at home. |

Posted - 10/29/2024 : 10:45:31 Not necessarily an upset but they shouldn't have won the way they did. 2020 Auburn vs. Thompson, Auburn was up 9 with like 40 seconds left and tried to throw the ball for some reason and Thompson got the ball back and scored and then kicked a game winning field goal. If you want a more traditional upset, then probably BC Rain coming back and scoring 21 in the fourth quarter to beat Demopolis in 2014. I only remember those from highlights though because I was 4 when that one happened. |

Posted - 10/29/2024 : 06:13:05 MA 10 - Catholic 7 in 2021 after Catholic beat MA 42-0 in the regular season. MA's coaches kept it vanilla in the regular season to scout Catholic since they were in different regions and might meet again in the playoffs. Made Catholic sufficiently mad that they dropped 72 on a not-bad MA the next year. |

Posted - 10/28/2024 : 21:27:16 Two that come to mind that I was happy about
2000 Russellville 7, Walker 6--Walker had upset nationally-ranked Gadsden the week before and looked to be the best team left in 5A. Stacked defensively, offense that could just grind you up. And Russellville, while having a talented team, was pretty young and had lost star quarterback Jake Tompkins the week before to a cracked fibula. Walker scored early and missed the extra point (the only one their kicker missed all year), and led 6-0 throughout. With about 4 minutes left, Walker had a 4th and short at their own 35. They went--and were stuffed. RHS took advantage of the short field and scored with about a minute left and won 7-6. This win really was the turning point for what Russellville became in the 2000s.
2005 Winfield 11, Colbert County 10--My dad was the defensive coordinator for Winfield in 2005. That Winfield team had gone to the state finals the year before but had lost a ton of talent. The region was also bad, but Winfield had a 21-8 loss to a mediocre Hamilton team in Week 10. Winfield had barely beaten the four seed from that region, a 20-14 win over Sheffield in round 1. So two weeks later, Winfield goes to Leighton and CT Manley Stadium to take on a Colbert County team that looked like a possible 3A contender. It was 10-0 in the blink of an eye, with Colbert County taking advantage of a fumbled kickoff and a shanked punt. The turning point was a 4th down play at the Winfield 35 in the second quarter. Colbert County was going to run a double pass, but the play was sniffed out. In desperation the receiver lateraled back to the quarterback--who kept retreating and retreating and retreating and finally fell 42 yards behind the line of scrimmage at the CC 23. Winfield scored, got the 2-pointer to make it 10-8, stuffed Colbert County and drove into field goal range and hit it right before half. Score was 11-10 and it stayed that way. |

Posted - 10/28/2024 : 19:49:29 2011 Rogers over Piedmont in 3rd round. Rogers was good but not great. They?d just barely gotten by Saks in the previous round. The game was in Greenhill (Rogers) and I was there. Rogers kept leading and you just expected piedmont to take over and they never did. Finally with a tight game late and Rogers still leading, Piedmont mounted a drive and you could just feel they?d walk away with the win. They drove into Rogers territory and a kid from Rogers who had lost his mom to cancer a few nights before intercepted a pass to seal the game. There wasn?t a dry eye in the house. One of the coolest things I?ve seen on high school football.
