Posted - 08/13/2025 : 14:35:25 I was going to be ambitious and do predictions for all of 3A South at once, but that's going to have to wait. Region 2 had three strong teams in 2024, a pair of okay teams, and a pretty low floor. In 2025 I expect the floor to be higher based on some new coaching hires even if the records are not much better. I don't know that the top of the region goes on a run a la Houston Academy last year, but it should still be competitive with the rest of 3A south
I think it will shake out like this:
1. Trinity - they're returning a QB who played in 11 games last year and should have a massive OL and front seven. They pushed MA around last year and nearly won in overtime. With the game at Trinity this year, I give them the edge over MA on a soggy and shaggy field.
2. Montgomery Academy - MA should have the best skill players in the region and perhaps in all of 3A south with a returning QB, RB, Braden Gordon at whatever position he wants to play, and a few other WRs. The Kirkland twins are big on the OL and DL but I worry about depth up front. They should have good overall numbers and are well coached, but I worry that some of the linemen will be a bit young this year. I think the road games at Tallassee, Houston Academy, and Trinity will be tough but they'll be a dangerous team to almost anyone in 3A.
3. Houston Academy - putting HA here is a bet on this program having a high floor. They're well coached and really are the banner program for this size of school in the Wiregrass. I've also heard, however, that last years runner up team had 20ish seniors on it and they lost their starting QB and best WR. That said, I expect coach Brundige has the program at a point where their down year is still making the playoffs.
4. Wicksburg - the Panthers are bringing back their QB and a speedster RB to operate out of Coach Cox's odd but very physical offense. Some reports indicate that they are returning quite a lot of players. With the consistent coaching and system in place, I trust Wicksburg to grab the last playoff spot. I cannot imagine how good of a team they would have had last year if Gabe Glover and Mason Burkhardt hadn't transferred to Houston Academy and Enterprise respectively.
5. Alabama Christian - Normally I would rate a team returning their QB and getting a good ATH back from injury higher, but ACA is also losing a good RB and great WR/RB/DB while having to implement a new offensive system. Last year's defense was just bad. I have also heard that they are facing major depth concerns as the school's student population has been declining for the past decade.
6. Prattville Christian - can you make a basketball school into a football school? If you can, PCA hired the coach to do it. Coach Moye has had a lot of success at Lowndes Academy and I believe he will get the most out of the students who turn out for the football team. The school has certainly hired a few good coaches in the past, however, so I remain curious if this is just a difficult job.
7. Slocomb - Slocomb is the biggest mystery for me in the region. I suspect that 2024s statistical improvement over 2023 is illusory as the late season offensive outburst was against teams with bad defenses. I do not think they'll be the worst in the region, but they will have a hard time against the rest of the competition.
8. Northside Methodist - Like PCA, Northside Methodist made a coaching upgrade in my opinion. Coach Sieving should help raise the floor of a program that didn't even see much success in AISA before hopping to the AHSAA. They might just not have the players to compete, however, so any improvement might be hard to detect in year one.

Thanks! I'm going to try to get to the rest of them before the season starts. 3A South has some good teams but they all feel flawed in some way. I think all the pre-season rankings having 3A North dominating the top 10 is fair.
TR Miller lost some good players and their coach, but got Ronnie Cottrell to come coach them.
Southside Selma lost the Smith brothers but bring back their QB, RB, and other WRs. Honestly, they were very impressive when I saw them beat MA last year and may make a similar run.
If you combined Trinity's line play with MA's skill players I'd pick them to win the South.
I have no idea what to think about Region 4. |

If the game plays out like last year, I think it's just a bad matchup for MA considering they lost a pair of major contributors on the OL and DL. Trinity was able to control the clock and keep their defense fresh against MA's offense. Plus, being the faster team usually doesn't mean anything at Ragsdale-Boykin. |
