Looks like it'll be a down year for this region. Even though both Arab and Guntersville lost a lot of talent they should battle for the crown. 3rd, 4th, and 5th could very well be a tiebreaker settle. Scottsboro took its lumps in 6A but should rebound in this 5A region. Boaz should have enough to sneak in the playoffs. Douglas, once one of the worst 5A programs in the state recently, was a surprise team last year and brings back most of that roster. Sardis and Crossville are probably looking at long years with late coaching changes.

Actual finish:

1. Arab
2. Scottsboro
3. Guntersville
4. Boaz
5. Douglas
6. Sardis
7. Crossville

It was pretty clear within the first few games that Arab was the best team. Maybe Guntersville could have challenged them better and beaten Scottsboro had they not lost their QB but who knows. Just happened to nail the last 4 though this region did turn out to be better than I originally thought. Either that or 5A in the north is just really really down this year.

Fairview lost their dynamic quarterback but should return enough to take Region unless Russellville has a trick up its sleeve. East and Ardmore will probably battle for the last 2 spots. Got a feeling either West Point or Brewer will be a spoiler team for one of the playoff teams (Brewer did it last year to Mae Jemison). Don't know what the rules are for recruiting players at a closing school but if I was Lawrence County I'd get as many Hubbard players as I can get.

Actual finish:

Russellville
Fairview
Brewer
East Limestone
West Point
Ardmore
Lawrence County

This region turned out to be the definition of mediocre. It was an non-surprising 2 horse race at the top and Lawrence County was the only team most people figured didn't have much of a playoff chance. The other 4 teams were all 2-3 region wise going into last week.

I see this as a 3 horse race between Hatton, Tanner, and Lexington. Lexington had Hatton's number last year but those two have been tightly matched for awhile. Hatton lost only 2 seniors and added kids via consolidation with RA Hubbard. Red Bay and Falkville duke it out for 4th. Sheffield lost several key contributors and a new coach in house as well. Tanner of course seems to be on the upswing again so there is no way to rule them out.

I posted my predictions to this region earlier, but I finally got a chance to sit down and look at rosters and returners. I was under the impression Word and Lard had graduated from Lexington. I know now this is not true. Also they have 10 starters back from a team that plays a lot of two way players. Hatton also has a lot more coming back than I thought, plus with the aforementioned transfers could be much better than I was thinking.
That being said my revamped region prediction is...

2A Region 8

1.) Lexington
2.) Tanner
3.) Hatton
4.) Falkville
5.) Sheffield
6.) Red Bay
7.) Tharptown

Just a question, but what makes you put Falkville so high? Don't Sleep on Red Bay..

Honestly, I just don't think the region will be very good. It was just kind of put sheffield, falkville and red bay in a hat and pick one out. I don't think Tanner is a clear cut #1 either, but seemed the best choice.

I saw Tanner last year up close at a 7 on 7 and OL camp, they looked like they were starting to come back with some talent.
we played Falkville last year the last game and Then I watched Red Bay in the spring. I believe RB would be beat Falkville... but thats why we play the game.. LOL

Tanner moved the Townsend kid to WR last year and he didn't touch the ball as much as he probably should have. They did have two very good linemen one was a senior and the other will be a junior. The rest of them were ok.

Falkville's QB is good but I am not sure how the rest of the team will be this year. They lost their running back and top WR. Also they kind of fell apart the 2nd half of last year. Could have been injuries I suppose.

Go Eagles!

I would also like to say that I heard some things the other day that would make me move Lauderdale County to third, ahead of Colbert Heights..

Bahahahahahaha

5-1 Region Champs last year. Should be better this year. Last year was mostly 9th and 10th graders bringing back 18 of 22 starters. Fyffe will be a challenge for sure, but it's not as much of a stretch as you think. Also, in the loss we turned the ball over 4 or 5 times. Falkville was solid team, but we didn't play well. That was kind of the grow up game for our kids.

Go Eagles!
