What are yall's opinions on the new GHSA playoff system? I think it could be a great idea with a couple tweaks, such as splitting it North and South, and guaranteeing the top 4 from each region. For example, in 7A, even though R4 might not be the best region, they would still get 4 playoff spots. With these tweaks, 7A would be (Home Team listed first) 1v16: Central-Phenix City vs. Bob Jones 8v9: Austin vs. Hewitt 5v12: Thompson vs. Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 4v13: Carver-Montgomery vs Vestavia Hills 3v14: Mary G. Montgomery vs. Florence 6v11: Daphne vs. Baker 7v10: Fair hope vs. Auburn 2v15: Opelika vs. Huntsville
Numbers come from (Win Percent)x(Opp. Win Percent)x(Opp. Opp. WP) Obviously it would have to be tweaked to prevent region teams from playing in the first round, but I think that it would be a great alternative, especially in 7A because it is so top heavy. |

Not crazy about it determining who makes the playoffs. But once you have your participants, I wouldn't mind seeing something like this to determine seeding and I don't even care if region teams do play in the first round.

| I made it to have the teams in and seeded them. That is what this is. |

Wow, that's a LOT of traveling.
Mary G. Montgomery vs. Florence - Talk about a long road trip! Well over 5 hours.
Would schools be okay with that?
It's just my opinion, but we already have too many teams in the playoffs. Over half make it to the first round. It makes March Madness look sane. Two teams from each region would be about right.

It is not as crazy as you may think. Some schools this year in 7A will be making those crazy long trips as 7A region 1 is matched up with Region 4 this year in the first round

I'm glad this is my last season for going to high school football games. There's no telling how many games I've attended since my first one in 1960. I watched Conrad Nix play high school football!
No more after this season. I can watch a good variety of games on television and youtube now. The bathroom is cleaner and closer, and the kitchen has cheaper snacks. |

I wonder what the longest playoff travel distance/time has been since they went to regions. 2006 Winfield at Geneva has to be up there. |

Google Maps has Winfield at Geneva as 4 hours and 29 minutes! Crazy.
Last year 5A Region 3 crossed with 5A Region 1 which sent #3 Northside down to #2 Williamson which Google Maps says is 4 hours and 5 minutes. All that driving and Northside got shut out 46-0. |

I think it makes a lot of sense for 7A only for a few reasons.
Only 32 teams and it would really focus on getting the best teams and rewarding the best seasons.
Personally I'm not sure they should guarantee 4 spots to every region, maybe 2 each region, who get guaranteed home games in first round and then wild cards. At the 7A level I think you can really ratchet up the competition so that teams really play all year.
For instance, how often is the 5th or 6th team in the Birmingham area better than the 3/4 in Huntsville or Mobile? Pretty much every year.
I could live with the four guarantees, but prefer the best teams model.
The other big factor is the resources these 7A schools have would allow it to work. It is much easier for them to make trips from one end of the state to the other than it is smaller classifications. Most 7A programs and (and large 6A who could end up in 7A) have tremendous resources. There is also one less round of playoffs.
I do think that is a much better and more entertaining format. But I do think it works for 7A only. |

Everybody thinks about travel for teams, and that's bad enough, but nobody thinks about travel for parents and fans.
Some people actually have to work for a living and if you can't take Fridays off during football playoffs, then too bad for you. Yeah, the parents and fans who are the ones paying for all of this.
One: Way too many teams make the playoffs, some even have losing records!!
Two: Playoffs should start close to home and then get further away as you win.
Three: All championship games should be played at a neutral site convenient to both teams, NOT all at one location jammed into three days (like they are now).

3. That would be a logistical nightmare. You'd have to wait until after the semi-finals to know which teams would make it, then try to coordinate a location. It would end up like the argument they had in the movie Friday Night Lights, and the Astrodome isn't an option here.
Just last year's 7A semis would have been proven the difficulty. Thompson vs Enterprise Central Phenix vs Hoover
BEFORE the finals the organizers would have had to reserve:
- Birmingham location: Thompson & Hoover
- Montgomery location: Thompson & Central Phenix
- Montgomery location: Enterprise & Hoover
- Who the hell knows where location (likely Montgomery): Enterprise & Central Phenix
The first three scenarios are difficult because large stadiums aren't just sitting there and available for usage 100% of the time. Also, there are a slew of people who have to be coordinated to use those stadiums (i.e. vendors, concessions, security, traffic, EMT, etc.).
As for the fourth location, there is no convenient middle ground that is big enough. If they went strictly with geography, they'd end up in Eufala or something like that, which is hilarious to imagine.
"Hey Eufala Mayor (whoever), we want to play the Super 7 7A Championship game there. It's two weeks away, and we need police, EMT, etc."
So now we're back to a not terribly convenient location like Montgomery, or maybe Troy, which isn't ideal for Central Phenix.
AND THAT IS JUST 7A. |
