I love the podcast, but it seems like Homewood is always getting glossed over as a legitimate state title contender.
That win over Parker last night was not a fluke. They never trailed in the game, had three turnovers (one of which was a fumble in the endzone gifting Parker a TD) and really was in control against an extremely talented Parker that kept fighting back.
Homewood has not trailed for one second all season. They did lose to Mountain Brook in a game they led by 10 late in a rivalry game. It took Mountain Brook two hail marys, one to send to OT and one on the 2 pt conversion in OT. They lost but never trailed in the game.
6A is loaded, especially 6A north, but I believe this team can get to the third round and give Clay Chalkville a ball game.
They have absolutely crushed every other opponent theyve played and have only really given up points late in the 4th outside of Parker and MB.
This team is absolutely a state championship contender along with Parker, Muscle Shoals, Clay Chalkville and Saraland.
Take a deeper look at this team and don't write that win off against Parker as a fluke or Parker not being focused. That isn't what happened.
You guys do a great job and appreciate all you do. Just want a little more love for one of the historic programs in the state who has its best team in a long time. |

Homewood will get their due. I thought they would win the Parker game. Its a senior laden team and they were good as juniors. Looks like they set up for Clay Chalkville in the bracket. That's a tall order, possibly the best team in the State regardless of class.
I learned last week that Homewood has won more State Championships and Playoff Games than any team in 6A. I wasn't surprised to hear it because I remember the 1990's and early 2000's. They had quite the coaching system from Park Ball through High School when Bob Newton was there. They all worked hand in hand which was kind of unique at the time. They produced lots of college players and even a few pro's as I recall. |

Good point although I watched that game on NFHS and Homewood won every facet of the game except the scoreboard. The winning hail mary was so wild it even made the weekly NFL pregame show.
Looks like they might get Mountain Brook again in the playoffs so a chance at redemption is possible. |

Someday I will forgive Patriots70, former Russellville Golden Tiger football star Bob Newton, Parker Gargis, Brandon Thornton, Tim Hawthorne, and the rest of those Homewood guys for keeping my beloved Russellville Golden Tigers from getting at least one state title in the early 2000s.
As for this year, that win over Parker is as good as you can get. They have a shot to make a run (although as you mentioned, Clay-Chalkville is the team to beat out of the North this year). |

A 6A team that is 6-3, perpetually in the playoffs, went to the Super 7 a few years ago, is one of the best run programs in state, that needed a miraculous 2-pt conversion fluke of a play to defeat Homewood.

(Edited to reflect my mistake calling MB a 7A team. They used to be, but obviously not recently.) |

Mountain Brook is 6a and they are also the same team who got beat by Pell City (a team that was down 27-7 in the fourth quarter to a 2a team). I still stand by my previous statement.

They actually needed two hail marys. One just to get it to overtime. Its a big rivalry game where anything can happen. MB won though and kudos to them.
That said. the schedule criticism leaves out that Minor is 4-4. Briarwood is 4-4. But look at Briarwoods schedule and why they are 4-4. They lost to a 7A, to Homewood, by 1 point to Leeds and Corner in a close game. Theyve beaten Ramsay and may still end up winning their region. Thats a good football team.
Homewoods region has a group of average teams like Jackson Olin, Mortimer Jordan and Minor. They play cross town rival John Carroll and next door neighbor rival Mountain Brook. They finish with 7A James Clemens who will finish 1 or 2 in its region. Although that last week can get weird when you've locked up your playoff spot and may need to rest certain players for the playoffs.
Outside of Parker and MB, they have destroyed everyone they have played. Take Mortimer Jordan. Homewood won 49-7. It was 42-0 at that half. MJ had 11 yards of offense with 3 minutes left in the game and had not crossed the 50 yard line until the final drive of the game against a bunch of 9th graders playing defense. They scored with 9 seconds left. The finished with 76 yards. Almost all of them on that last drive. Jordan beat Cullman, Jordan was in a 14-7 game with Parker mid 3rd quarter before it got away from them, were competitive with Ft. Payne. They aren't a great team, but they aren't terrible.
Homewood has done that to every other team they've played. Everyone has some bad teams on their schedule to due to region play. It is what it is. But they have done what they were supposed to do. They could've run the score up like some teams do on these teams if they'd wanted. Just no need. In fact, Homewood having their starters out the entire second half the first five weeks was a factor against Mountain Brook, who had four straight close games, some wins and some losses. Its the reason Homewood had issues putting them away numerous times and MB hanging around and pulling off a miracle.
That game made them significantly better now that they've learned how to close out games against big time opponents. Again, Homewood turned it over 3 times, one of which was a fumble in the endzone that gave Parker a tuddie. The game didn't have to be as close as it was. Homewoods A+ game will be a tough out for anyone. |

Sorry
We had some good games in the early 2000's against teams with the word "Russell" in it!
