Southside football coach Gary Nelson accepts job in Georgia

Southside is now searching for its third football coach in as many years.
Gary Nelson will be the new football coach at the Walker School in Marietta, Georgia. He accepted the job Tuesday and informed his Southside players of the move Wednesday.
?I never intended to leave so soon,? Nelson told The Times on Wednesday. ?I just told the boys, Southside is strong. There?s a great system in place. Great administration, great leadership, great involvement from the community, really good kids and good football players.?

So why leave? Nelson was presented a unique opportunity for his family.
Nelson came to Southside from Montgomery Academy, a K-12 school. Walker is also a K-12 school.
?There?s an opportunity for my children to go to school, for my wife to work at the school and for us to be in the same place together," he said. "For a dad with a young family, opportunities like that don?t come along every day. That?s what really made it attractive to me is the chance for the four of us to do life together.?
But it wasn?t an easy decision. The Etowah County Board of Education approved Nelson as the Panthers coach nearly a year ago, Feb. 4.

An unusual year then unfolded as the COVID-19 pandemic hit soon afterward. Southside completed a 7-4 season with a first-round berth in the Class 6A playoffs, one year removed from a two-win season. Nelson was named The Times? All-Etowah County Coach of the Year.
?I?ll always appreciate how our kids bought in to me and into the things we were trying to teach them,? Nelson said. ?To be honest, I didn?t know what to expect. I wasn?t familiar at all with Southside when I got here. I didn?t know anything about the school culture, the kids or anything like that. I was blown away at every turn by what a great job they did. I?m going to miss them. It?s never easy to do these kind of things.?

Nelson said he will remain at Southside ?at least a couple more months? to help Southside through the transition.
?Those folks in Southside have been good to me and I want to the best of my ability to do what I can for those guys,? he said. ? ? It?s important to me in the weeks ahead to just be here for whatever anybody needs me to do.?
