7A: Enterprise vs Central Phenix City
After giving Auburn all they could handle but coming up short in 2022, Enterprise was able to finish the job in 2023, beating Auburn 17-16 last week. They now get the chance to host Central Phenix City with a chance to take firm control of Region 2. Their defensive duo of Keion Dunlap and Eric Winters will look to keep Central's 5 star receiver Cameron Coleman in check. But the biggest question will be whether or not Enterprise can score on Central's defense.
Pick: Central Phenix City 24, Enterprise 13
6A: Saraland vs St. Paul's
It's St. Paul's turn to face the juggernaut that is the Saraland offense. While they've got some good players, most notably Sophomore LB Anthony Jones, this isn't likely to go well for them. Look for KJ Lacey, Ryan Williams, & Co. to keep rolling.
Pick: Saraland 41, St. Paul's 14
5A: Springville vs Leeds
It is shocking that this is a big game to say the least, as Springville looked like a team seriously devoid of talent a year ago. After reportedly installing the Wishbone over the offseason, they look like a brand new team, putting big numbers up in a shocking win over Etowah and narrowly losing to Mortimer Jordan (who beat Leeds in their season-opener). Springville has an opportunity to put the entire state on alert this week, as Leeds is expected to compete for a state title.
Pick: Leeds 49, Springville 35
4A: Handley vs Jacksonville
There were questions about the Handley rushing attack after they had to replace another RB who is now playing college ball, but those questions seem to have been answered after hanging 55 on defending 3A champions St. James. For Jacksonville, QB Jim Ogle has them dreaming of a state title. We'll find out how realistic those dreams are this week, as the winner of this one likely wins Region 4. This could be a shootout.
Pick: Jacksonville 43, Handley 35
3A: Sylvania vs Piedmont
We will learn a lot about Sylvania this week. They were a trendy pick to not only win region 6, but make the state title game this year. With Piedmont expected to still be Piedmont, and Geraldine's statement win last week over Fyffe, it's hard to pick a true favorite in this region. The next two weeks will clear things up for us.
Pick: Sylvania 17, Piedmont 14
2A: Tuscaloosa Academy vs Aliceville
I love these early season games that will in all likelihood decide a region championship. Tuscaloosa Academy may have the best passing attack in 2A behind QB Preston Lancaster. Aliceville will have a prolific offense as well, don't let their first two games fool you. But both teams have sneaky good defenses as well, so this game may not devolve into the shootout some might expect, although this does seems like the kind of game where there are a wide variety of outcomes. Everything from a defensive slugfest to a shootout seems on the table, so I'll go somewhere in the middle.
Pick: Aliceville 28, Tuscaloosa Aca. 14
1A: Florala vs Georgiana
I've already written about Spring Garden vs Wadley in our Gurus column, so I'll go with the game with the next highest stakes here. The third seed in Region 2 is likely on the line in this one. Florala has a playmaker at QB in Rayshon Coleman. Georgiana saw one of the state's biggest turnarounds last season, going from 0-10 in 2021 to 7-4 and a playoff appearance in 2022. Their program seems to be back on track, and a win here could give them a favorable matchup in the playoffs.
