At what point does the AHSAA include magnet schools into the competitive balance formula? The primary reasons that private schools are subject to this rule that they: 1. Private schools can control their overall student population. (So can magnet schools) 2. Private schools can recruit athletes to their institution and offer financial aid. (Magnet schools can also recruit athletes into their institution.)
Although magnet schools are restricted to a designated school zone in which to recruit from, they do not have to concern themselves with funding due to the fact that they are still considered "public schools."
Magnet schools that are in largely populated areas such as Birmingham and Montgomery have a definite advantage over traditional public schools due to large number of student athletes to choose from.
The AHSAA needs to get ahead of this before we start seeing magnet schools that are nothing more than football, basketball, or baseball factories.

While I understand this viewpoint, it has not produced any great affect yet. None of the magnet schools are great at sports, and most of them don't even have a football team. For example, I live ten minutes away from Columbus Georgia. The school district has two magnet schools, and only one, Columbus High School, has won a state championship in the last 15 years, and they won it in soccer last year. While in theory, it sounds good, it has little to no affect. |
