If they move up, maybe Hewitt will be forced to play us again after turning tail 10 years ago.
Actually CCHS is the #3 largest 6A school. I don?t know what their AHSAA count will be but I recently heard they have around 1400 total in school this year. I believe it?s an increase from 2024 but no idea how it breaks down per grade which is obviously the most important number.
The cut off for 7A last time was around 1097 and I think it mostly increases slightly every time. Here is the top 10 for 6A.
6A Hazel Green High School 1,090.00 Spain Park High School 1,086.70 Clay-Chalkville High School 1,083.55 Helena High School 1,062.65 Percy Julian High School 1016.65 Homewood High School 1,001.85 Gadsden City High School 993.75 Buckhorn High School 993.5 Athens High School 989.5 Mountain Brook High School 979.55
Some of the schools on this list are growing substantially due to population increases while others are fairly level. In B?ham areas like Homewood and Mountain Brook are land locked with little growth but places like Helena and neighborhoods that feed Spain Park have a lot of new construction and increasing population so it stands to reason their numbers will increase. I think Pinson and areas nearby that are zoned for CCHS also have some growth just maybe not quite the level of Helena and Hoover. You?ll probably be closer to 7A this time and Clay-Chalkville has shown they can certainly play at that level.
Good post.
Regarding Hazel Green, they're almost certainly going 7A if construction is any indication. While they're land-locked by the TN border, and are bracketed on either side by Sparkman and Buckhorn, and Huntsville is just south, there is significant growth in the area due to Huntsville's explosion.
NOTE: This will be terrible for Hazel Green. |

What else would you suggest? There really isn't much more of a fair way to do it.

I stand corrected on our rank. 1400 students sounds right. When I graduated from there almost 20 years ago, we had around that many students before falling off a bit when Trussville opened their own system.
It will be very interesting to see how things shake out. We may go up or someone behind us may have a lot of growth and be a surprise addition to 7A like Hillcrest was last time. As far as growth, I'm not sure whether we are adding housing but the athletic profile of the school attracts a lot of interest and is preferable to Pinson, Huffman and Center Point. The school itself is the single worst school in the Jefferson County System according to the state testing metric, so that could keep people away. One way or another it will be close. |

Based on what I know CCHS is the preferred school in the east/north east Jeffco area despite the testing metrics. Compared to Pinson, Center Point and Huffman I can see why. I know there is a moderate rate of housing units being built in the area and I?m fairly certain the majority of that falls into CCHS zoning. I can?t see Developers/Builders starting new construction in the other areas. Demand for new builds just isn?t there in those school districts. That being said I think we see CCHS 10-12 grade report a larger number this period but it?s probably a coin toss if it?s enough to go 7A. If so your will probably get your wish because Trussville is not getting any smaller. There are a high number of new builds and the population is certainly increasing in Trussville. I think they?re safely in 7A from now on. |

I should have been more clear when pointing out Homewood and Mountain Brook being landlocked. They are not only landlocked but almost all of their land is fully developed. Their numbers probably won?t change much and could even go down as they have at times in the past.
Hazel Green being in Madison County is swept up in the Huntsville boom. I know growth is through the roof and it makes sense that Hazel Green would be prime for development. Good schools, nice city, close to the employment center of Huntsville and lots of undeveloped land. All the markers line up for growth.
They will have to work on athletics. It?s hard when your growth outpaces the programs and you are forced to catch up. Need to get more boys out for football instead of band, soccer, etc. Need a dynamic athletic director and it goes from there. |
