Maybe Lee Peacock knows something about this. Was looking at Excel's 1974 team and saw they went 10-0 and didnt make the playoffs. Found an article from Lee's blog that says:

Excel unbeaten, misses playoffs: Coach Lee Holladay?s Excel High School Panthers got their 33rd consecutive season win Friday night as they upended a powerful McKenzie team 26-0 to complete their third straight undefeated season.
The Panthers ended the season tied with Lyeffion for the Area 2 championship but will not go to the state playoffs, losing to the Alabama High School Athletic Association tie-breaking rule.
(Standout Excel players that season included Rhett Barnes, Butch Grissette, Al Hall, Johnny House, James Jordan, Rex McCants, Keith McMillian, Mike McQueen and Darrell Wiggins.)

Lyeffion went 5-4 that year and made the playoffs over a 10-0 Excel team. Just curious of how this was decided. Was it a coin flip? Just thought it was interesting.

Anyone that can shed light to this, I would be interested in hearing.

I was a student in junior college at Monroeville in fall of 74.I think that Lyeffion had some designated area games with outside opponents that counted.Lyeffion played Sweet Water very strong in the regular season game losing only by one point 14 to 13.I remember that Billingsley was a designated area g
ame for the bulldogs at that time.
