What could possibly be memorable about a 2-0 football game? Well, the score for one. When Oneonta defeated Vinemont in the first round of the 1979 Class 2A state playoffs it marked the lowest scoring game in state history where one team defeated another team. Now there is a record that can never be broken. The Oneonta Redskins and the Vinemont Eagles fought tirelessly to a scoreless tie most of the game before a safety determined the outcome. With just 4:19 remaining in the game, Oneonta linebacker Rusty Moore tackled Terry Phillips in the end zone for the winning points. The play came after the Vinemont quarterback delivered an errant pitchout to Phillips that was fumbled backwards into the end zone. Phillips was able to track the ball down and pick it up before being swarmed by the Oneonta defense. Neither team could muster much offense as the deepest penetration by either team was the 17-yard line. The Redskins were outgained by the Eagles 147-156 in a game that was marred by six turnovers and included thirteen punts. The 1979 season was a little unique for the Redskins as they won games by scores like; 6-0, 7-6, 10-0, 10-6 and 6-0. In all, they finished the season with a 10-2 record, losing in the second round of the playoffs to Parrish 14-7 the next week.
