Strickland played 3 years varsity football for Benjamin Russell High School. He was named 1960 - 2nd Team AA All State, 2nd Team AAA All State, 2nd Team C.C. Conference; 1961 - AA All State, AAA All State, AAAA All State, 1st Team Border Conference. Tied for most valuable player of conference; Player of the Week twice in the Montgomery Advertiser and once in the Birmingham News. 1959 - 9 passes for 3 touchdowns; 1960 - 13 passes for 5 touchdowns; 1961 - 10 passes for 4 touchdowns. Also participated in wrestling (3rd in state in 1960) and track.
