Ensley High Left during his 4 years on varsity team was Captain for 2 years. He was a good ball passer - Rushes 123; Yards 826 - Average 6.7 yards. Total offense: Rush 826 yards, Pass 186 yards for a total of 1,012 yards. He was named All-City, 4 years; All-State, 2 years; All-American, 2 years; Best All-Round Back, 4 years at Ensley. He was also All-County in baseball and All-City in basketball in addition to participating in Track.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
