            Payne specialized in punting, kick-offs and punt returns. His punting average was 40.7. Athletic honors included: All-American honorable mention, All-Southern honorable mention, All-State, All-NEAC, All-County, Most Valuable Back in 1963-64. He also participated in track.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
