Young was All-County, Calhoun County Back of the Year, and All-State in football. He gained 812 yards rushing for an average of 7.6 yards a carry, and averaged 33.3 yards per punt. He intercepted 6 passes and returned one kick-off for 85 yards. Tony was All-Calhoun County and All-Area in basketball and qualified for the state track meet in high jump.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
