Samples played both ways for Tarrant and kicked 32 of 37 extra points his senior season. He was a tackle on the Tarrant team and his specialty was kicking. Alvin was captain of his squad, All-State, All-American, All-County and Lineman of the Week. He participated in baseball and track and was State Champion in wrestling in the heavy weight class.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
