Citronelle High School end played varsity football for 3 years. His specialty was offense. He played at the End position. In 1965 he caught 20 passes that netted 422 yards and produced six touchdowns. In 1966 he caught 23 passes for 547 yards for eight touchdowns. He was voted Best End Award; All-Conference FB; All-Conference Baseball and All-State Football. He played four years of basketball and baseball.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
