Lamar County quarterback played three years of varsity football. He was All-Conference and All-State in 1967; All-Conference; All-State, All-Mid South, 1968; Sate 2A Champions and Conference Champions, 1967. He also played basketball and baseball and ran track. In his junior and senior seasons he attempted 255 passes with 144 completions and tossed 35 touchdown passes. He also scored 11 touchdowns rushing. He accounted for 3,511 yards of total offense during his high school career.

In 1970 Monroe Academy won the first championship in the A.I.S.A. by defeating Lowndes Academy 6-0.
