Fairfield High School halfback had two years of varsity football. His specialties were kickoff and punt return. Owens averaged 110 yards per game rushing as a senior at Fairfield. He averaged over 100 yards per game just in kickoff and punt returns his final season. He was All-State; All-Metro; Player of the Week; All-American Most Athletic; Outstanding Back of the Week; All-American; He ran track, also. He was the first African-American signed to a scholarship at Auburn.
