Lyon was a starter for four seasons at Lowndes Academy. He threw for 58 touchdowns and ran for 40 more scores during his high school career. As a senior he threw 31 touchdown passes. He played four years of varsity football and was Captain of his team. He was First Team, Birmingham News Super All-State and News 2A-A First Team. Birmingham Post-Herald A All-State; Honorable Mention Orlando Sentinel All-Southern High School; Most Valuable Player in Camellia Bowl in 1967; Most Valuable Senior Athlete in Lowndes Academy (1968).
