Phillippi played varsity football 4 years lettered in basketball and track. He was All-State, Super All-State, All-South, Scholastic Magazine All-American, Scholastic Coach All-American, and Montgomery Advertiser Back of the Week. Philippi rushed for 367 yards on 52 carries and completed 108 of 201 passes for 1,510 yards to lead T.R. Miller to the Class 2A state title his senior season. He also accounted for 26 touchdowns and punted for a 41 yard average.
