            Akin played offensive guard on his varsity football team. His specialty was blocking and tackling. He was awarded athletic honors such as All-TVC; Prep-All-American - Coach & Athlete Magazine; Teams Most Valuable Lineman; Permanent Captain 1974; A. C. Curry Award.

Foley outscored their opponents 433-6 in 1961. The Lions were named state champions by the Alabama Sports Writers Association that season.
