Haney rushed for 3,162 yards in his high school career at Lauderdale County. He also scored 39 touchdowns. Played offensive halfback on varsity for 4 years. Earned Most Valuable Back, Most Valuable Player, All-State, Super All-State, and All-American. Rushed 1,035 yards averaging 6 yards per carry. Completed 4 passes for 84 yards averaging 21.0, scored 11 touchdowns with 3-2 point conversions for 84 points.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
