Sanders accounted for 2,139 yards of total offense as a senior at Murphy while playing quarterback for the Panthers. Sanders completed 55 of 144 passes for 1,131 yards and 10 touchdowns while rushing for 1,008 yards on 203 carries and 17 touchdowns. He was named All-American, All-State, All-Region and received the District Scholar Athlete Award. He was also team captain and participated in track.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
