Gilder came back from a season ending injury his junior year to amass 1,400 yards rushing and score 20 touchdowns for Stanhope Elmore. He was a four year starter. During his high school career he rushed for 4,700 yards and scored 56 touchdowns. He was named All-State, All-American, All-County, Metro Player of the Week, Blue Chip Best Offensive Back and Community Press Player of the Week.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
