Ed played running back in high school where he rushed for 1,464 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also scored two touchdowns on receptions. He played free safety on defense, picking off four interceptions and making 58 tackles. He led Warrior to a spot in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state playoffs while averaging 8.8 yards a carry.

Etowah defeated Oxford 69-63 in 1991 to set a state record for most points scored by both teams in a playoff game.
