Evans quarterbacked the Chiefs to their first ever state championship his senior year. He finished the season with 371 yards rushing on 80 carries. He also passed for 549 yards, completing 29 of 91 passes including four touchdowns. He played though the playoffs with a severely injured shoulder.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
