Steve was considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation as a senior. He ran for 1,089 yards and passed for over 1,200 yards with 23 touchdowns to lead Colbert County to their second straight Class 3A state title. As a junior he passed for over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns.
