Thornton was considered a devastating blocker for the Volunteers. He was the highest grading offensive lineman among a senior laden group. He also caught 24 passes for 384 yards and two touchdowns. He helped lead the Volunteers to the Class 6A state championship game. He caught 21 passes as a junior.
