 High School Bio:

            Charles Lassiter Nelson was a running halfback from Opp, who played both offense and defense. This boy has been taking athletic honors since the ninth grade when he received honorable mention for the All-State Team. This was only the beginning - in the 10th grade he made the second All-State Team. He hit the big time in the 11th grade and made All-state. He again was selected for the All-State team in 1953. The Montgomery Advertiser selected Charles as the most All-Around player in 1952-53. Honorable mention to the All-American Team rounded out this outstanding halfbacks high school honors. Coach J.H. Etheredge records the following statistics for Charles, threw 7 touchdown passes in one game; 9.8 yards per carry for his last two seasons; gained 349 yards in one game passing. He also played basketball and baseball.





Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
