James was a three-year letterman; placed first in discus, Alabama Relays 1954-55; Vulcan Relays; Mississippi Southern Relays 1955; first in AU local meets 1954-55; and was captain of his football squad. James was coached by Joe Sharpe and participated in football and track.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
