Greenwell was named All-Tennessee Valley Conference; All-State, honorable mention All-America. He played varsity football two years plus basketball, track; tennis and swimming. He specialized in pass receiving, catching some 25 for approximately 450 yards and three touchdowns. He also blocked two punts in one game and added three extra points during last season.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
