Wilson was named All-Jefferson County, All-State, All-Southern Honorable Mention All-America. He also starred in track. Called Butch, he lettered three years, played regular tailback two of them. As a senior, he led the Gophers to an unbeaten 10-0 record and a 7-0 victory over Fairfield in the Dental Clinic Bowl.

In 1970 Monroe Academy won the first championship in the A.I.S.A. by defeating Lowndes Academy 6-0.
