Salter was named All-County and second team All-State in football, East-West All-Star in baseball. He played four years of varsity football, was regular tailback the last three, and captained the 1958 team. A fine baseball pitcher, hes equally brilliant as a triple-threat back. Last season, he completed 10 of 200 passes for 1,000 yards, averaged approximately 40 yards per punt, and was a dangerous runner.

Foley outscored their opponents 433-6 in 1961. The Lions were named state champions by the Alabama Sports Writers Association that season.
