 Bill Meredith*

William E. "Bill" Meredith was born in Crenshaw County, Alabama. Meredith played football at Holmes Junior College in Mississippi and at Memphis State University, where he received a degree in education.

Meredith was drafted to play football for the Detroit Lions, but World War II put a halt to the professional sport before he got a chance to showcase his talents. Instead he turned to coaching the sport he loved.

His first coaching experience came when he was named the head football coach at Foley High School in the fall of 1945. Over the next eight seasons he led the Lions to a 44-27-5 record. In 1952 Meredith moved to Brantley for three seasons that produced a 14-14-2 record.

Meredith seemed to find a home in 1956 when he moved to south Mobile County and Alba High School. Meredith remained as the head football coach of the Sharks for the next fourteen years. At one time or another he coached every sport offered at the school.

Following his retirement from coaching in 1970, the schools football field was named Meredith-Landry Stadium in his honor. He settled permanently in Bayou La Batre where he would remain after retirement.

Merediths teams at Alba won two county championships and the Oil Bowl in 1964. He taught until he retired from the Mobile County Public School System in 1980.

Coach Merediths overall record is 117-110-15. He would pass away on February 11, 2011 in Mobile at the age of 94. His coaching legacy lives on in two of his grandsons, coaches Scott and Bill Meredith, who have worked in various coaching positions in Mobile County.
