The National Teams with the Most All-Time Victories

Welcome to AHSFHS.org. Our latest project is on a National level. We will be researching the winningest football programs across the United States. To start we will work toward collecting scores and coaches for every school with at least 700 victories.

Texas is the most represented state of the teams on the list with 12. Pennsylvania follows with 11, then Kentucky with 10, Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma and Tennessee with seven, Illinois with five and Arkansas with four. Massachusetts, North Carolina, Louisiana and South Carolina each have three teams in the top 100 and Michigan, Connecticut, California and Indiana round out the schools with multiple entrants. Eleven other states each have one selection.

The Beginning

The game of American football as played today by high school, college, and professional teams grew out of rugby-style football which in the mid-1870s replaced a largely kicking game known as association football. Although initially played on village greens and on college fields, the first intercollegiate game took place on 6 November 1869 when Rutgers defeated Princeton 6-4 in a soccer-style game. Five years later, Montreal's McGill University playing at Harvard introduced rugby football, which would be rapidly adopted by eastern teams.   *Answers.com
