2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Clay-Chalkville completed the 2017 season with a 11-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region six, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Clay-Chalkville made a nice playoff run in 2017, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Pinson Valley team by the score of 37-7. The Cougars hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Gilmer saw improvement as they won eleven games following a 6-5 record in 2016. The defense was very stingy last season as Clay-Chalkville ranked 36th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.6 points a game. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 78-26. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 22 seasons, Clay-Chalkville has gone a combined 181-84. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 6A and 40th in the AHSAA. The Cougars are led by head coach Drew Gilmer who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 11-3 record in his first season at Clay-Chalkville. The Cougars saw improvement from a 6-5 record the season before coach Gilmer arrived. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gilmer. Coach Gilmer's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 11-3 (78.6%). The Clay-Chalkville Cougars will play in Class 6A region six during the 2018 season. The Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-41 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 6A and 18th in the AHSAA. Clay-Chalkville will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. Region six will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Cougars should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Cougars are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Cougars have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2011 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Cougars open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Griffin GA on Thursday, August 23. This will be the second meeting between Clay-Chalkville and Griffin GA on the football field. The Cougars have a 1-0-0 record against Griffin GA. They last met in with Clay-Chalkville returns 6A All-State defensive lineman D.J. Dale. He was named to the first team last season. The Cougars also return defensive back Jaylin Mack.
