2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hartselle completed the 2017 season with a 6-4 record. Last year Hartselle just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region eight with a 3-4 region record. Since 2010, Hartselle has gone a combined 72-25. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Hartselle has gone a combined 188-92. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 6A and 45th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2007. The Tigers are led by head coach Robert Godsey who is entering his sixteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 130-50 over the past fifteen seasons at Hartselle. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of thirteen times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Godsey. Coach Godsey led Hartselle to a state championship in 2011. Coach Godsey's overall record as a head football coach in twenty season stands at 172-65 (72.6%). His 172 wins rank 16th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Godsey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times and won five region championships. The Hartselle Tigers will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 6A but move from region eight over to region seven. With a little luck and some improvement, the Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season. Unfortunately, Hartselle finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. Hartselle came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Tigers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Austin on Friday, August 24 at J.P. Cain Stadium. Last year the Austin Black Bears finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 6A region eight. The Black Bears lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Pinson Valley by a score of 51-50. Hartselle and Austin have met a total of 58 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 32-25-1 record against the Black Bears. They last met in 2017 with Austin winning by a score of 28-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
