2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Columbia finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Columbia finished eighth in Class 6A region eight with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 492 points last season. The Eagles have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Eagles have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Columbia averaged scoring just 3.3 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 49.2 points a game. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-20 record. Since 2010, the Columbia football program has struggled with a record of 16-64. Over the past 12 seasons, Columbia has not won much with a record of 31-89. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 6A and 359th in the AHSAA. The Eagles have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2010. The Eagles are led by head coach Marcus McCall who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Columbia. The Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach McCall. The Columbia Eagles will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Eagles remain in 6A but move from region eight over to region seven. The Eagles enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 22 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Columbia will be to simply win some games. The Eagles open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Lee Huntsville on Friday, August 24 at Milton Frank Stadium. Last year the Lee Huntsville Generals finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 5A region eight. The Generals lost in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs to Briarwood by a score of 35-14. Columbia and Lee Huntsville have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 1-13-0 record against the Generals. They last met in 2017 with Lee Huntsville winning by a score of 42-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
