Huntsville completed the 2017 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 7A region four, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Huntsville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Thompson by a score of 35-0. The Panthers improved in 2017 with their first winning season since 2013. It marked the first time since the 2013 season that the Panthers qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Huntsville has gone a combined 39-48. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 7A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Huntsville has managed to compile a record of 142-120. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 7A and 149th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Mark Fleetwood who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-5 record in his first season at Huntsville. The Panthers saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Fleetwood arrived. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Fleetwood. Coach Fleetwood's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 6-5 (54.5%). The Huntsville Panthers will play in Class 7A region four during the 2018 season. The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region four this season. The Panthers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Decatur on Thursday, August 23 at Shorty Ogle Stadium. Last year the Decatur Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in seventh place in Class 6A region eight. The Red Raiders ended last season on a positive note with a win over Sparkman by a score of 38-20 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Huntsville and Decatur have met a total of 92 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 35-51-6 record against the Red Raiders.
