2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Grissom finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Grissom finished eighth in Class 7A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2004 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Grissom averaged scoring just 12.7 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Grissom football program has struggled with a record of 9-71. Over the past 25 seasons, Grissom has not won much with a record of 83-165. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 7A and 318th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2005. The Tigers are led by head coach Chip English who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Grissom. The Tigers saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach English arrived. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach English. Coach English's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 3-7 (30.0%). The Grissom Tigers will play in Class 7A region four during the 2018 season. This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four. The Tigers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Hazel Green on Friday, August 24 at Bob Grimwood Stadium. Last year the Hazel Green Trojans finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 6A region eight. The Trojans closed out the regular season with a loss to Oak Mountain by a score of 36-29. Grissom and Hazel Green have met a total of 22 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 14-8-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2015 with Hazel Green winning by a score of 49-7. Grissom returns 7A All-State running back Mel Dantzler. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
